SOLOMON ISLANDS Red Cross Society (SIRC) recently joined many other national societies across the world to celebrate World Red Cross Day.
The World Red Cross Day, which falls on May 8 every year, is a day the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement celebrate the founder of the Movement and the continuing work of its staff and volunteers all over the world.
The theme for this year’s celebration is “Everywhere for Everyone” which symbolised strength, reach and the contribution of its 17 million volunteers and staff across the world.
President of SIRC Society, Mr Donald Tahani explained that the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is there for everyone.
Its a network of around half a million staff and 17 million volunteers brings positive change to those who are vulnerable as the movement is contributing for change.
“The movement contributes to the needs of those who are affected in disaster and conflict situations, providing assistance in urban centres as well as advocating on behalf of those in need in policy circles and to the governments.
“The staffs and volunteers of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement work according to their Seven Fundamental Principles, which sets the basis on how they carry out their work,” he said.
Mr Tahani uttered that SIRC Society continues to be a vocal humanitarian organisation in Solomon Islands.
“This is through performing its work in its capacity as auxiliary to the public authorities.
“SIRC Society has aspired to be a continuing leader and voice for humanitarian action in the country has now established a new branch, which is the Honiara Red Cross Branch.
“The branch is endorsed in the General Assembly held last month. The Honiara Branch will look after the Honiara City and also manages the Society’s over 200 active volunteers in Honiara,” he said.
