WESTERN PROVINCIAL capital Gizo, is bracing for the arrival of one of the biggest cruise boats from Carnival Australia, September this year.

Director of Tourism in the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (MCT), Barney Sivoro, in email, said the MCT together with the Solomon Islands Visitors Bureau (SIVB) and Western Province are gearing up for this event, which is scheduled for September 30, 2016.

“This is the first time such boat is coming to Gizo so the facilitation committee is preparing and organising activities for this event.

“The Ministry together with SIVB and the Province are gearing up for this event and preparation is underway through the Cruise facilitation committee,” Mr Sivoro said.

The Tourism Director has also cleared off recent reports saying that the Vakatepe Festival has been scheduled for this year.

“There is no Vakatepe Festival happening this year as far as the Ministry is concerned unless that is an initiative from the Province.

“Vakatepe Festival is always coincided with the Brisbane-Gizo Yacht race, and normally happens in May or June of the year which is ideal because of the trade wind.

“If there is any such event happening it will be next year not this year as we are yet to confirm this with our partners in Brisbane,” Mr Sivoro said.
