SOLOMON ISLANDS National University’s, School of Nursing and Allied Health Science will assist the Ministry of Health and Medical Service in the fight against Non Communicable Diseases.
Dean of School of Nursing and Allied Health Science, Ms Verzilyn Isom said the school of nursing will be introducing a new programme in Nutrition and Dietetic as part of its support to assist the ministry deal with NCD.
She told this paper that the development of the programme is based on the rising number of NCDs in the country.
“This new programme will be on diploma level and nurses as well as other interested individuals can apply,” Ms Isom explained.
She stressed that the two years programme will focus on food and dietetic.
Ms Isom said the SINU School of Nursing and Allied Health Science have been working closely with the Ministry of Health and Medical Services in compiling the programme.
She said the school is committed to assist the Ministry of Health and Medical Service by offering the course to be taught at the university.
This paper understands that non-communicable diseases has been increasing in the country over the past years.
In 2014, National Advisor of Non Communicable Diseases Dr Geoff Kenilorea announced that the country is in crisis over non-communicable diseases.
He told the media that non communicable diseases like diabetes, stroke, heart attacks are increasing in the country.
Dr Geoff said almost two-thirds of the hospital beds are occupied by non-communicable disease patients.
