URGENT ACTION is needed to stop the illegal trafficking of wildlife in the country.

Speaking during the marking of the World Environment Day, World Ocean Day and Coral Triangle Initiative Day yesterday in Honiara, Director of Fisheries, Edward Honiwala said the country needs to do more in protecting its wildlife.

He said as the country marks the 2016 World Environment Day with the theme, “Zero tolerance for illegal wildlife trade, and as the key slogan also say “Go Wild for Life”, the theme focuses on the illegal trade of wildlife.

“The theme was chosen to remind us that the damage caused from this illegal trade is so serious and so reaching that urgent action is needed.

“We must support the actions taken globally to reduce the demand and illegal trade in wildlife.

“So as we celebrate this important day, think seriously and support the theme “Zero Tolerance for illegal wildlife trade” and help safeguard species under threat for future generations,” Mr Honiwala uttered.

He stressed that as it is their strive, the MFMR is currently working on new regulations under the New Fisheries Management Act 2015, to ensure management measures are in place to protect marine species that are under threat.
