THERE IS a need for the Honiara City Council to coordinate with other organisations in order to carry out its by-laws effectively.
Honiara man, Henry Kahui made the statement, urging HCC to consider this and see what they can do to push their by-laws to activeness.
He said the enforcement of the city by-laws are weak and people tend to show no respect to them as well.
He said a classic example of it is the selling of smokes and betel nuts behind the corridors of Chinese shops in Honiara and along the streets of Honiara as well.
“People continue to sell betel nuts despite the enforcement of the by-law which never allowed for the selling of smoke and betel nuts along the streets of Honiara.
“But people keep on doing it and they will continue to do it as they have never seen any effective measures from the HCC on this particular issue.
“It is obvious that the enforcement unit under the HCC is doing really well in carrying out and monitoring the by-law, but it needs more so people can fear and live up to it.
“But it will never happen if HCC don’t invest more money into this area and if they don’t mind seeking coordination with other organisations in Honiara,” Mr Kahui said.
He states that a way forward could be to engage security firms in Honiara to carry out the work along them, or other organisations they think can carry out the work to an expected standard.
Adding that in order to do that, HCC must increase its budget and must also be serious about it so work can be done.
Mr Kahui said that HCC should have already make right plans for it, since the issue of selling smoke and betel nut is not just an issue that has popped up yesterday in Honiara.
