CHEC assures Naro-Lambi road project will kick off soon

CHIAN HABOUR Engineering Company (CHEC) has given assurance that work into the Naro-Lambi road project will start very soon amidst delays faced by the company.

CHEC, who had come under the media spotlight after revelations were made of their affiliation to a World Bank blacklisted subsidiary, said work into the national road project will commence.

Speaking to Island Sun earlier this month, a company representative said machinery for their work has already arrived.

CHEC was awarded the Naro-Lambi road contract in partnership with Lee Kwok Kuen’s Solfish Company in July 2015.

The CHEC representative said the project had faced some minor delays due to the previous bad weather and delays from the government.

The Naro-Lambi project is the first international project to be fully funded by the national government.

CHEC and Solfish had signed $43 million landmark contract for the project.

The project includes earthworks and pavement construction for a two-land road to replace the current single lane road stretching to 16.7 kilometres over several water crossings.

It will also include the construction of concrete box and pipe culverts, drainage and up to five bridges.

“So far everything is on schedule. Work will start very soon,” said the CHEC representative.

The project was awarded to CHEC by the supervision of the former permanent secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure, Moses Virivolomo.

Virivolomo, who is now the permanent secretary for the Aviation sector, has told of his full trust in the Chinese firm despite revelations of CHEC’s ill-debt history.
