THE MINISTRY Of Culture and Tourism in collaboration with the Solomon Islands Fishing Safaris (SSFS) has successfully conducted a fishing guide training on Isabel province.
A total of 12 local guides from Kagata Homestay and other existing local operators around Kia, including Papatura Retreat took part in the training over the weekend.
The training was held to help local guides know their roles as fishing guides, know basic safety and understand the expectation of a fisherman when on guided fishing tours.
Kane Dysart from Solomon Fishing Safaris said the western part of Isabel province holds great potential for sport fishing, as such it is important to promote and train the guides on the importance of sport fishing and how it can give back huge benefits.
He said the area has a lot to offer for fishermen and also other different adventure activities.
Mr Dysart stressed that such training will help to equip local guides to become professional guides when handling such market.
He advised local operators to look after their region from destructive activities such as logging and over fishing.
Laurie Leketo from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism told participants that fishing is a niche adventure market in the Solomon Islands.
He reiterates that such training help upgrade the local guides’ skills and standards to be competitive in the fishing market.
Mr Leketo told operators not take the training for granted, but go back and apply the skills they learn during the training to help grow and promote their tourism operations.
He continues to say that the fishing tour guide training is looking forward to conduct similar workshops in other potential Provinces in the Solomon Island.
Meanwhile, one of the participants, Frank Sua described the training as very new and the first of its kind for tourism operators on Isabel Province.
He said the training was very professional and practical.
“We have local knowledge on fishing and had been guiding visitors in the past, but the tactics and lessons from this training have been very up skilled,” Mr Sua added.
