THE COUNTRY still is not ready nor prepared to take on the federal government system, says a former member of the Western Provincial assembly.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the former MPA said the country continuous to experience poor governance, unemployment, poverty, urban drift, population growth and corruption which are central issues.
He said the nine provinces still lack proper infrastructures, thus are the core issues to firstly address if the country considers the introduction of a federal system of government.
He adds if the country is to be fragmented under the federal constitution, a nationwide reconciliation must also be reached, given the fact the social tensions that toppled nation in recent years will perhaps create disunity.
“Much work remains to be done to reconcile the communities of Guadalcanal and Malaita and no effort should be spared in bringing this about.
“A reconciled nation, communities prepared to put the past behind them and to trust each other again, and sharing a pride in the country, are some of the essential pre-requisites for successful constitutional change,” he said.
He however suggested that it is clear that much work will be needed by all sectors of the government and community with input and assistance from donor countries.
He said the government has much to do in all areas of good governance to restore public confidence and trust, to alleviate poverty, unemployment and the influence of corruption and it is hoped that all the servants of the Crown will further dedicate themselves to achieving these worthy objectives.
