A FORMER local road operator has urged the Ministry of Infrastructure and Development (MID) to re-look at road repair contractors.

The senior plant operator who served under the Roads and Bridges Division for the former Ministry of Transport, Works and Utility since 1980, has lashed out at MID for failing to live up with its side of work.

The former operator who requested anonymity told Island Sun that he is aware that MID road repair contractors would be stripped off their contracts if their work is underperformed.

This would make way for another contractor.

However, it is obvious that this has been misled and violated, he added.

He said now it is public knowledge that Honiara roads continue to deteriorate in the hands of a handful of contractors whom the MID continues to engage but fail to deliver proper services.

He said even a child can tell that the road repairs in the city are sloppy and unfriendly with portholes on the main highway and with each repair, it grows bigger.

He said from the days of the Ministry of Transport, Works and Utility, the roads were well managed and looked after despite fewer contractors.

“But today, there an about nine road contractors but still the roads are better left to worse,” he adds.

The former senior tradesman says on the other hand support, the road issue that it is an eye sore to see the tarred sealed road that leads up to Iron Bottom Sound (IBS) hotel patched with gravels.

He said the feeder and main road outside of Honiara is worsening with drainage and culverts that have been accumulated with rubbish blocking the flow of water.

He called on the national government and the Honiara City Council to re-look at demarcate which feeder road comes under the SIG and HCC.
