THE GUADALCANAL Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) for Talise Ward Glandall Sesehala claims that the Guadalcanal provincial speaker deprived him of his opportunity to raise what he described as important realities when the assembly sat last week.
Sesehala had already raised his concern on the matter last week aligned with a call for the newly elected premier Honorable Anthony Veke to withdraw.
The call resulted in a press statement from the Premier’s Office allegedly pointing out that the Talise leader would have got matters right if he had remained until the close of the assembly.
“Hon Sesehala would have got his answers should he sit for the entire sine die motion session. Instead he left the Assembly and head straight to Island Sun Newspaper to lash out his speech there” the Statement reads.
“He walked out early when Hon Veke interjected his speech with a point of order pursuant to section 90 of the standing orders provincial government act 1997. The order stated that; “If a member wishes to make a statement critical of another member it must be done by substantive motion of which due notice has been given” Having realised this, Hon Veke refer a point of order pursuant to section 90 & 91 and the Speaker ruled in favour pursuant to section 92. “
However, Sesehala maintains that the reason why he left assembly earlier last week was because the speaker had obstructed him twice during the meeting.
“I walked out of the assembly room, because I was denied by the speaker twice to give my account as member of the Provincial Assembly on point of order. The denial does not sound well on an assembly when important realities are needed to be discussed on the floor of assembly.
“I was abstracted by the speaker. Therefore, I have no one to be answerable to”
He said that if they had allowed him to complete his point they will realise that section 90 – 91 of standing orders is not applicable to what he’s intending to put across for the assembly.
In the statement published this week, the Premier maintained that his candidacy and premiership was qualified under the mother law, provincial government act and standing order and that pending court case has nothing to do with his integrity and leadership.
“Therefore the court case should be a non-issue to avoid contempt of court and prejudice character assassinations.”
However, Sesehala again pointed out that when it comes to the leadership of Guadalcanal Province, it is true in a normal situation. “But the truth here in terms of Guadalcanal Province leadership is that he is accused of misusing of public funds from none other than the province itself.”
“So already when the leadership is in his hands, it may appear as a direct contempt of court.”
“What he described as being representative of the people is true, but maybe those who voted him might not really know who the current premier is.”
“In other words, if he said he is represented by the people then why did civil groups such as the Guadalcanal Forum, Guadalcanal and Women’s Society and the Guadalcanal public raise concerns regarding leadership credibility, especially when he himself is accused.”
“I would rather have a premier who is illiterate than to have one who is an accused.” the Talise leader continues.
