Former Mayor disregard act

THE FORMER Honiara City Mayor has been asked to return properties belonging to the Honiara City Council.

The Honiara City council confirmed that Hon Alfrence Fatai is still residing at the Honiara City Mayor resident and at the same time holding on to the HCC vehicle after he resigned from the post.

Clerk of Honiara City Council, Charles Kelly said Hon Fatai actions in regards to the matter had breached HCC’s standing orders under the HCC Act.

He explained that Hon Fatai should have returned every properties belonging to the Council soon after his resignation.

Mr Kelly said the properties should be handed over to the Honiara City Clerk while waiting for the election of the new Mayor.

Mr Kelly said HCC is aware of the issue but chose to give time for Hon Fatai to return the properties.

He said Hon Fatai is a well-educated person and should have understood and abide by HCC’s law.

Attempts to get comments from the former Mayor over the weekend was futile.

Meanwhile, Mr Kelly said his office is still awaiting response from the Prime Minister’s office and the Ministry of Home Affairs to set the date for the election of a new Mayor.

He said the Prime Minister’s Office and the Ministry of Home Affairs are working on the document deemed necessary for the election in the absence of the Minister of Home Affairs.

“If the documents is ready we will announce the date, but as reported earlier, our estimate date is 16 of this month.

“We will let the public know about the election this week,” Mr Kelly said.

This paper understand that members are in intense lobbying to form a new government.

Earlier reports indicate that the executives have seven councillors while the non-executives are with four.
