NEW TECHNOLOGY to preserved and improve crop resistance to the impacts of climate change is being developed in the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL).

The technology is being applied in a joint project between Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea through National Agriculture Research Institute (NARI).

The project has officially ended but the established biotechnology and screen-house for MAL to continue with research on crops in the country remains.

Although project is at the research level, Permanent Secretary for MAL, Jimi Saelea says that it will benefit the rural people.

PS Saelea said this new technology will ensure food security, addressing salt tolerance and other effects of extreme climate change.

Measuring the importance of the technology, he said it can yield high and pest resistant strains of crops, especially sweet potato and slippery cabbage.

Mr Saelea said the biotechnology has high advantage for meeting the demands for food and nutrition security and livelihoods of growing population.

Above that, the local farmers will be provided with the technology to adopt and adapt to enhance their farming activities and ensure food security and profitability for standard of living.

The biotechnology is developed through the EU-ACP Slippery Cabbage and Sweet Potato Improvement Project.

The project is funded by European Union
