THE SALESIANS of Don Bosco inaugurated a new province under the patronage of Bl. Philip Rinaldi (3rd successor of Don Bosco) with Fr. Peter Baquero as the Provincial Superior on Saturday 10 July.
All the Salesian Priests and brothers were present for the occasion in the Shrine of Mary Help of Christians at Boroko (Port Moresby). Fr. Klement Vaclav, representative of the Rector Major officiated at the concelebrated Eucharist. At the Eucharistic celebration, Fr. Peter made the Profession of faith. Fr. Klement presented him the icon of the Vine and the Branches, symbolising the spirit of the new Province bearing abundant fruit. A tree was planted in front of the newly constructed Provincial House, symbolising the new beginning. Entertainment and dinner in the GYM of Don Bosco Technological Institute concluded the day.
The Salesians from Philippines went to PNG in 1985, while the first Salesians in Solomon Islands were from Japan in 1995. Today there are seven institutions in PNG and two in Solomon Islands, making up the new Province of PGS (Papua New Guinea – Solomon Islands).
