Urgent call to support youths alarming issues

IT IS alarming that youth involvement in substance abuse is rapidly rising.

This has caused stakeholders in the country to step forth for young people.

The Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs (MWYCFA) has acknowledged Island Sun Issue 2320 article which carries the headline “rising under age youths in night club consuming alcohol”.

With the rising issue, Youth Development Officer for Honiara and Renbel, MWYCFA, Mr Alfred Kiva stresses that it’s everyone’s business to address youth issues.

He urgently calls on parents, guardians, teachers at schools and stakeholders in the country to collaborate on addressing this trend.

“It’s everybody’s business to address youth issues, parents at home, Teachers at school, Church based organizations, private sectors and Government organization has part to play to address youth issues Solomon Islands.”

Mr Kiva also stresses that they can’t control young people consuming alcohol because the root of it starts at home.

However, the DCCG have its mandate through MWYCFA-Youth Development Division to provide strategic direction to support youth development in Solomon Islands, he said.

On the National level, Mr Kiva adds, MWYCFA has worked with the nine provinces in Solomon Islands to set up National Youth Policy and set up national and provincial youth stakeholders committee to collaboratively support each other with other line ministries to address youth issues.

Currently, the youth development division in its 2016 annual work plan is to review the National Youth Policy and to develop the National Youth Employment strategy to address youth unemployment issues.

Mr Kiva said MWYCFA is a small ministry, however its mandate is youths, which constitute the majority of the country’s population.

And, because this portion of population is not revenue-earning, the ministry is limited in their resources and budget to support youth development in the country.
