THE HIGH cost of living in the country is identified as a factor that is driving many changes.

It has been identified as one of the issues that impinge on the development and implementation of effective natural resource management in Solomon Islands.

Even in remote villages, the costs associated with daily life are high and hard to overcome, according to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Gizo Field office 2016 – 2020 Strategic Plan.

It highlighted that school fees, petrol for those with outboard motors and food are some of the high costs associated with daily life and are hard to overcome.

“The lack of income opportunities further exacerbates the effects of high living costs.

“Therefore, the socio-economic aspect must be embedded in natural resource management in Solomon Islands,” it says.

The four year strategic plan has set three main strategies for WWF’s further efforts to assist the people of Solomon Islands manage their natural resources for food security, livelihoods, and sustainable environment.

The three main strategies under the Strategic Plan are Sustainable Inshore Fisheries, Sustainable Community Livelihood and Sustainable Tuna fisheries.

WWF hopes that by 2020, the three strategies will work side by side to enable people to effectively manage their resources, ensuring natural resources are used in a sustainable manner and that all domestic tuna fisheries in Solomon Islands are being sustainably developed under effective national and regional management.
