CARE IS very much needed in order for the country to protect or look after the ocean we have.
Director of Fisheries, under the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resource (MFMR), Mr Edward Honiwala made the statements when celebrating the World Environment Day, World Ocean Day and Coral Triangle Initiative Day yesterday in Honiara,
He said that on this World Ocean Day and Coral Triangle Initiative Day, the theme for 2016 is “Healthy Oceans, Healthy Planet”, and No Place for Plastics as the country commemorate these important events today (yesterday).
Mr Honiwala urged the people to know the importance of the oceans, and why people should protect the oceans from pollutions such as plastics.
“The ocean is the heart of our planet, just like your heart pumping blood to every part of your
body, the ocean connects people cross the earth, no matter where we live.
“The ocean regulates the climate, feeds millions of people every year, it produces oxygen and is a home to an incredible array of wildlife
“The ocean is a source of revenue to the government and provides job opportunities to our people,” he said.
Mr Honiwala adds that oceans also provides for us important medicines and so much more.
However, he stressed that as they gather to celebrate the beauty, the wealth and the promise of the ocean, “let me remind everyone, that we are all responsible to protect and care for our ocean.
Mr Honiwala uttered that In order to ensure the health and safety of our communities and future generations, it is imperative that we take the responsibility to care for our ocean as it cares for us too.
