THE SOCIETY of the Melanesian Brotherhood (Tasiu) of the Anglican Church of the Melanesia in the country have marked the 71th Day attributed to the founder, yesterday, at Marovovo, West Guadalcanal.
The founder of the Melanesian Brotherhood, the late Ini Kopuria founded the society in 1925 and died 20 years later in 1945.
In an interview with this paper, Secretary to the Melanesian Brotherhood, Mr Alphonses Garimae said the event happens annually on 6 June, which marks the day in which the founder was called to rest.
He says that this year’s event was marked with the theme “Advancing Melanesian Brotherhood’s Value for Missions”.
Mr Garimae stated that the theme was taken from a Melanesian Brotherhood’s great conference held at Tabalia last year where the theme was also set as a guiding model for the brotherhood’s mission for the next four years.
Explaining the programme of the day, he said a pilgrimage was held from Tabalia to the Marovovo-resting-place of Ini Kopuria.
“The pilgrimage which was a bare foot walk was consisted of the Melanesian Brotherhoods, Novice, Companions from Kohimarama and Student Companions from Selwyn Collage and St Nicholas College in Honiara who took part in the journey.
“The pilgrimage as it has in its tradition, it has three stopovers where the journey is to be stop or station in three different locations, as it has been identified that these three locations where the stopover was held is much important to the life of the late founder of Melanesian Brotherhood.
“For each stopover, there was a pray to be conducted as the journey continue until it reach Marovovo.
“The first station was at Kologovu – the place of birth of the late Ini Kopuria, the second station at Visale – where he lives with his relatives and third at Paru – his permanent home before the journey comes to Marovovo where the grave of the founder was laid,” Mr Garimae stated.
