MAKING COMMITMENT to improve solid waste management is a way forward to addressing the environmental health issues in Honiara.

Director of Environmental Health in the Ministry of Health and Medical Service, Tom Nanau told Island Sun this week that waste management is currently seen as a big issue and requires everybody’s commitment.

He suggested that responsible authorities, businesses and residences have to continually recognise, appreciate and response to the importance of waste management in the city.

He said stake holders campaigns have to also focus on making the appeal of a changed mindset to the wider community, this is in order for the objective of solid waste management campaigns to be achieved.

He stressed that the enforcement aspect has to be deterrent and the Honiara City Council (HCC) to actively enforce applicable bylaws.

Mr Nanau furthers that while the wider community seems to be ignorant, HCC needs to be firm in resolving the issue and committed to enforcement by assigning different people to engage in various roles.

On the other hand, a source from the HCC enforcement Office maintains that anyone found guilty of littering is liable to fine according to the HCC ordinance.

He maintains that a waste management committee was set up in 2015 to administer waste management programmes.

However the source said if the committee is going to be active in executing its role, then it is likely that those ignorant to HCC rules are going to be stopped by enforcement officers on a daily basis.

The source further mentioned that there is current scarcity in the logistic support in terms of waste management in Honiara, and as result solid wastes have accumulated in the large Bins.
