MAROMARO FRESH-fish market was burnt down in the early hours of yesterday, Tuesday 10 May.

And according to several witness accounts, the fire may have been deliberate, with a vehicle sighted in the vicinity minutes before the fire started.

The owner, Henry Suia Maenu’u, along with shocked members of the community are calling on the police and authorities to investigate and arrest the culprits.

Mr Maenu’s says that this is the second time such has happened to their properties.

He explains that the market house was a gift by his father, the late Paul Maenu’u, to the people of the community, from Lungga to Bunscreek, to help them earn money by selling their catch in the provided venue.

It also provided a place of rest for mothers, children and the old in their travels to and from their homes to town.

He says that the burning down of the market house will impact the community hugely.

One local vendor, John Misitana, of Lungga, mourns the burning saying that the venue had been likened to a garden for him and his family, where they would come and sell their catch to sustain the family.

With the burning, he ascertains that his family will now face struggles to survive.

He amplifies the call for the police and responsible authorities to bring those responsible to face justice.
